Kimberley Search and Rescue says the freeze-thaw cycle brought on by recent weather is posing a significant risk on lakes and rivers.
SAR officials say ice dams on rivers and creeks are a particular concern as they can suddenly give way, releasing a torrent of water, ice and other debris.
Lakes can be subjected to a sudden drop in water elevation, which can lead to unsupported ice collapsing.
Conversely, a rise in water levels could cause the ice to break apart and rupture.
Those recreating near lakes, rivers, creeks and streams are urged to pay close attention to ice flow activity in the area.
“We encourage people to publish or share a trip plan with their loved ones and make sure to carry the essentials when they go out,” said Search Manager Peter Reid.
“Even if you’re out for a day, it’s easy to run into something unexpected in this part of the world.”
