BC Government to strengthen consumers protection laws

The BC Government hopes to further protect people by amending consumer protection laws.

The government has proposed amendments to the laws, with the goal of promoting contract fairness, transparency, and strengthening consumer rights.

Attorney General Niki Sharma says for too long, BC residents have faced unfair contract terms and predatory sales practices.

“These new amendments will better protect people from unfair business practices in an increasingly complex marketplace,” said Sharma.

Along with contract fairness, the proposed changes include providing important contract terms upfront, introducing notification requirements for automatic subscription renewals, banning direct sales of high-cost household products, and providing more clear pathways for you to cancel contracts.

The plan is for the government to support a smooth transition of these changes by working with Consumer Protection BC.
