Demolition of the abandoned Kootenay Springs building in Cranbrook is set for next week.

Work will begin on Mar. 3 on the northeast side of the property before moving to the south side.

City staff say there will be short periods of traffic disruptions until Mar. 20.

Motorists will still have access to Slater Road, the Industrial Park, or Highway 3/95 via 6th Street Northwest but are encouraging residents to use 3rd Street Northwest or King Street instead.

There will also be a full one-day closure on Mar. 21.

The building was built in 1925 as a brewery before it was sold to Purity Dairy in 1962.

Overtime, Purity Dairy stopped using the building and Kootenay Springs started bottling water until it closed in 2005.

It’s been abandoned since then and suffered a fire on Oct. 17, 2020.

City staff say they are still working on plans for future use of the property.
