The City of Fernie is proposing a 6.1 per cent property tax increase in its draft 2025 budget and residents are invited to share their thoughts.
An online survey is available until Sunday, February 23 to gather residents’ thoughts on the City’s spending plan.
As it currently exists, Fernie’s draft budget focuses on maintaining its existing services, advancing key projects and planning for critical infrastructure work.
However, the current projection anticipates a shortfall of $573,589, which means the city must make cuts or increase property taxes.
According to the City, the draft budget proposes a 6.1 per cent hike, which would mean a property tax increase of $173.38 on an average assessed single-family home valued at $925,235.
Fernie residents are invited to an open house on Wednesday, February 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Senior’s Centre.
All of the submitted feedback will be presented to City Council at the next budget meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25.
