City applies for grant funds to accelerate infrastructure projects

The City of Cranbrook has applied for a 50/50 split grant worth $6.6 million to help get infrastructure projects underway.

If successful, the federal grant will pay half with the city being on the hook for $3.3 million.

This will help the city pay for a number of projects that are coming down the pipeline.

That includes sewer main projects on 1st Street South, 6th Street North and 16th Avenue.

Construction and implementation of these projects will allow, in the short term, for planned developments to move forward and create additional needed housing in the city,” said engineering manager Curtis Penson.

“In the long term, the upgrades have been designed to accommodate the anticipated buildout population of the city, including allowances for densification.”

City staff are unsure of when the funding announcements will happen.
