Wyatt Wurtz of the Columbia Valley Rockies was named the top defenceman for January.

Wurtz put up three goals and 12 assists in seven games.

Rockies head coach Tayler Sincennes says he’s found his offensive game after some injuries to start the year.

“He started the year a little banged up and has really worked through that and persevered. He’s done an excellent job of getting back into shape and working through his injuries,” he added.

“He was playing really good hockey but wasn’t being rewarded and last month the doors blew open for him and had an excellent month of hockey.”

The KIJHL has also named its stars of the week and the Fernie Ghostrider’s Taylor Haggerty was named the forward of the week.

“We scored eight goals in a weekend and he has seven points,” said Ghostriders coach Chad Scharff.

“Our expectation is he leads our team, we don’t expect him to get seven of eight points but that’s what he did.”

Josh Hager of the Kimberley Dynamiters was also recognized as the top goalie of the week for a 25-save shutout.
