Cranbrook helping Spirit of the Rockies Society in quest for grant funding

Cranbrook council has agreed to act as a qualified donee so the Spirit of the Rockies Society can pursue grant funding from the Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies.

The CFKR is a registered charity and can only grant to qualified donees, which the society is not.

The city is, however, and can be given the grant funds to then distribute to the society.

Finance director Charlotte Osborne says they likely won’t have to do this in the future.

“New Canadian Revenue Agency guidelines do allow for the creation of an agreement between the foundation and non-qualified donee,” she said.

“I believe the community foundation would need to amend their mandate to include something that would cover this type of agreement and I believe they are working on that.”

But the city is happy to help for now.

“In the meantime, this is a solution that would work for the society and it’s the same request that council approved last year,” she added.

The Spirit of the Rockies Festival runs from June 19-22.
