Kimberley seeking input on Age-Friendly Accessibility Plan

The City of Kimberley is looking into ways of making the community more accessible to people of all ages and levels of ability.

City officials say the plan will have a list of recommendations aimed at enhancing the physical environment and municipal services for people living with disabilities and those 55 and older.

The plan will focus on land use and street connectivity, access to green spaces, safe and inclusive neighbourhood design and features meant to help maintain social connections with friends and family.

“Improving the community in these ways can benefit everyone by fostering a sense of belonging, attachment, and identity in the community,’ said city officials.

The City says broad community engagement is a key feature of Kimberley’s Age-Friendly Accessibility Assessment.

“This process will gather input from people with accessibility needs, older adults, caregivers, service providers and the general community. Engagement activities will run through February to mid-March,” said the City.

On Monday, February 3, Kimberley launched an online survey to gather public input, with in-person public feedback opportunities to come.

The City says they will host a series of focus groups in the wheelchair-accessible Aquatic Centre Meeting Room.

  • Monday, February 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday, February 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 26 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for service providers only and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A public open house will go ahead on Thursday, February 27 from 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall.

City officials will also conduct one-on-one interviews with residents from February 3 to March 7. Interviews can be done over the phone or virtually.

“The City welcomes participation and feedback from all community members, particularly individuals with accessibility needs, older adults, and caregivers. Both positive and constructive input will help shape a more inclusive Kimberley,” said city staff.
