The Elk Valley is under an extreme cold warning as Environment Canada predicts overnight wind chills to bring a frostbite risk.
The forecaster says gusty easterly winds could plunge wind chills values between -35 and -40, particularly at night and in the morning.
Environment Canada predicts the cold overnight winds to persist into Wednesday.
Officials say extreme cold puts everyone at risk, both humans and other animals.
“Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes,” said Environment Canada.
“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”
