Multiple calls from drivers stranded near Numa Falls in Kootenay National Park have prompted a reminder to keep winter driving safety in mind.
Columbia Valley RCMP says they received several calls from stranded drivers in the area on Wednesday, January 22.
Parks Canada helped out by sending members to the location who called tow trucks and arranged transportation for the stranded travellers.
Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol says motorists need to drive according to road conditions.
“It’s important to slow down, but make sure you’re using your own eyes and you’re fully aware of the road and not relying on cruise control, which does not know when you’re coming up to a slippery turn,” said McLaughlin.
Mountain driving conditions, in areas such as the Sinclair and Vermillion Passes in Kootenay National Park, can be especially treacherous and unpredictable during inclement weather.
“Mountain passes are particularly troublesome in the winter, so it’s important to slow down and give yourself time,” explained McLaughlin.
“There’s generally a lot more wind in the passes, so your visibility is going to be limited as well. You also should remove all of your snow from your vehicle, you don’t want that blowing around, too.”
Columbia Valley RCMP officials say you should also remember to pack gear such as extra winter clothing, blankets and an emergency car kit.
McLaughlin says you should ask yourself if you and your vehicle are ready to tackle whatever winter has in store.
“Is your vehicle ready for winter? Are your tires and brakes in good, working order? Do you have dedicated snow tires or winter tires? They have a compound that increases grip and works better in winter,” said McLaughlin.
“You should also ask yourself if you are ready for winter. Do you have the ability, experience, confidence and eyesight to drive through a storm? Do you have enough clothing that if you need to get out of your vehicle, you will be warm enough? Do you have a snow brush, shovel and maybe some flares and a traction mat if you get stuck?”
Police also recommend letting your friends or family know your travel plans, including your travel route and expected arrival time.
