The City of Cranbrook has closed the Rotary Park washrooms until further notice due to recurring damage and vandalism.
City officials say the damage done to the Rotary Park washrooms alone has cost the city $2,500 since November 2024.
The city says vandalism to public washrooms has been an ongoing issue for the past year and costs taxpayers about $2,000 per incident every few months.
The issue is also occurring in Moir Park and the Kinsmen Quad Ball Fields.
“In the summertime, with more washrooms being open, the vandalism and damage increased in frequency,” said Kirby Korven, Public Works Manager.
“This vandalism to all of our outdoor washroom facilities is not only replacing what is broken and covering up graffiti but it is also the removal of garbage and drug paraphernalia that is left behind.”
City officials say they are working with the RCMP to ensure there is an increased police presence at Cranbrook’s numerous outdoor washroom facilities to deter further vandalism.
