The City of Cranbrook will start enforcing changes to the waterworks bylaw that require the implementation of water meters.
Council approved the implementation of water meters last year but the requirement had not been enforced until now.
According to the bylaw, all new buildings and any buildings that required a new, upgraded, or replaced water services must install water meters.
These changes are designed to require developers to pay to install the water meters and water meter pits.
City staff says Cranbrook is one of the largest communities in B.C. to not have water meters, but the current changes don’t include universal metering.
However, that is likely to change.
The city will be bringing forward options for universal metering to council for discussion sometime in 2025.
