Highway patrol reminding drivers to stay safe on icy highways

Icy highways are presenting challenges to highway drivers and BC Highway Patrol is reminding you to keep safe.

Corporal Michael McLaughlin says driving below the speed limit is the best way to stay safe on the highway.

“Slowing down will dramatically improve your odds of avoiding collisions, this includes serious injuries and death,” said McLaughlin.

“Your driving ability doesn’t matter, slowing down is important. Also, remember that speed limits are for ideal driving conditions, not these winter conditions we’re facing now.”

Making sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving is an important step in travelling safely.

“A few questions to ask yourself are: Is your vehicle ready for winter? Are your tires and brakes in good, working order? Do you have dedicated snow tires or winter tires? They have a compound that increases grip and works better in winter,” said McLaughlin.

“You should also ask yourself if you are ready for winter. Do you have the ability, experience, confidence and eyesight to drive through a storm? Do you have enough clothing that if you need to get out of your vehicle, you will be warm enough? Do you have a now brush, shovel and maybe some flares and a traction mat if you get stuck?”

McLaughlin says the BC Highway Patrol has seen a recent uptick in serious collisions as icy conditions worsen through the winter.
