More development on the horizon in Sparwood

After a busy 2024, the District of Sparwood is expecting another year filled with development.

A big project on the slate this year is the Westwood Heights development.

Mayor David Wilks says the city is finalizing some of the planning.

“We’re continuing with the Westwood subdivision to ensure services are in place for the next phase of that project,” he said.

“Our planning department is working on that.”

The district sold 20.45 hectares to New Dawn Developments back in 2023 to develop a residential area with approximately 200 units.

He says the district is also excited to get started on the new wastewater treatment plant which they secured provincial funding for last year.

“We’re really focused on the wastewater treatment plant,” he added.

“People get really mad when they can’t flush their toilet, so we have to make sure it works.”

The wastewater treatment plant has been an ongoing challenge for the district with it being behind schedule and over budget.

“We were anticipating to be around $13 million but it’s now looking like close to $31.5 million,” the mayor said.

“We have grants for 8 million and will really want to see if the province will increase the grants based on inflation over the last four years.”

Wilks says council also has a number of housekeeping items to deal with early this year but nothing major.
