Local ski hills boasting successful early season

Heavy snow dumps and ideal conditions have plenty of residents and tourists shredding powder at Fernie and Kimberley destinations.

Matt Mosteller, Resorts of the Canadian Rockies spokesperson, says November and December brought plenty of fresh snow to the slopes.

“We have some incredible snow, in fact, we’re measuring it in feet this year, which is incredible for December,” said Mosteller.

“We’ve had over 14 feet falling in Fernie and over six feet in Kimberley.”

Mosteller says the resorts have been busy with locals and tourists enjoying the skiing and snowboarding conditions.

“Given that snowpack and great temperatures for skiing over the holidays, there were a lot of good times and a lot of people skiing and snowboarding in Fernie and Kimberley,” said Mosteller.

“For so many people, this is an important winter activity. It gets people outside together and it’s great for your physical and mental health.”

Both Kimberley Alpine Resort and Fernie Alpine Resort are major destinations and economic drivers for the tourism economy in the region.

“It’s a draw for people, not only locally, but also across Canada and around the world. Many people, and I think this is a credit to both Fernie and Kimberley, want to come back after they come and experience that incredible passion and care in those communities and then experience this incredible mountain time,” said Mosteller.

“Many people like to return and some may make the decision to move or invest into the community in the long term. Skiing and Snowboarding play a vital role in the economy of the region and we’re grateful to be part of both communities.”

Mosteller says more great skiing conditions are in store for the weeks ahead.

“We’re in January with incredible snow and weather. Looking ahead, we have some sunny days and some snow in the forecast for the middle of January,” said Mosteller.
