RDEK Chair Rob Gay is looking back at 2024 and says it was a year that highlighted climate challenges in the region.
“We’ve had some real extremes when it comes to climate. This year we had most of July, about 20 days, above 25 degrees so from a climate change perspective we are getting these extremes that people warned us of and it’s something we need to consider,” he said.
He says in the new year the RDEK will be addressing climate change.
“Early next year we will have a climate action plan coming out from the regional district.”
While the region dealt with high heat, strong windstorms and wild fires, the RDEk had it’s fair share of positives.
Gay says the Coldstream Creek Project was certainly a highlight.
“We’ve had a pretty good year with a number of capital projects, one of our larger ones was the Coldstream Creak,” he added.
“It was on budget and on time.”
He says that’s a big feat in today’s day and age.
“It’s very hard these days to run a project on time with just the escalating costs and things you don’t have control of,” Gay said.
“This is a $12 million program and even going over 10 per cent is a lot of money so kudos on that.”
