Search and Rescue crews recovered an injured backcountry skier and experts say the incident is a reminder to be ready for anything in the outdoors.
Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) jumped into action on December 6 to save an injured skier in the Jumbo area, with backup from Kimberley Search and Rescue.
With shortened daylight hours, SAR officials say having the necessary gear is vital in case you have to spend the night if things go wrong.
“File a trip plan with someone who knows what you’re doing, where you’re going and when to expect you back in case they need to contact us on your behalf,” said Mountain guide and CVSAR member Jordy Shepherd.
“Take what you need in case you need to spend the night out in the cold. We cannot always get to you when it’s dark or really stormy, so if there’s any kind of delay, you need to be able to take care of yourself out there.”
This equipment could include food, water and supplies to keep yourself warm until help arrives.
Shepherd also recommends getting to know the area and the local forecast for places you plan to visit.
“Research the area you’re going to, even if you’ve been there before and look up avalanche conditions the day of your trip,” said Shepherd.
“You are your own best resource out there. Having training, equipment, and being prepared to deal with the situation is your best chance at survival.”
