Cozy Bear shelter renovations to start in spring

The Cozy Bear Lodge in Cranbrook is being converted into a seniors shelter and renovations are expected to begin in the spring.

BC Housing purchased the hotel, formerly Lazy Bear Lodge, in June 2024 with the goal of turning it into a dedicated seniors shelter.

Tyler Baker with BC Housing says they are currently finalizing the details and renovations should go ahead this spring.

“The renovations are expected to begin next year in the spring,” he said.

“We’re just finalizing the design, procurement and working with the contractor.”

He says the renovations won’t take very long and the shelter should open shortly after.

“Once it is actually going to renovations, they’re actually not going to be that extensive,” he said.

“We expect it to be opening in spring/summer.”

Once open the shelter will have 30 beds and will offer supports to the seniors living there.

“This will provide housing with support services such as meals and referrals to health and community supports,” Baker added.

The shelter will be operated by the Community Connections Society of Southeast B.C.
