Workers will begin to stabilize some damaged beams in Amy Woodland Elementary School to prevent the building from collapsing.
According to the Southeast Kootenay School District (SD5), a recent structural engineering investigation found that the structural integrity of the school’s gymnasium has been compromised.
SD5 has enlisted Kootenay Disaster Restorations to shore up the building’s gymnasium.
Crews will focus on stabilizing two damaged glulam beams and ensuring the safe removal of compromised interior items and hazardous materials.
“Structural monitoring, weatherproofing, and temporary safety measures will be implemented to comply with safety standards and protect the remaining structure from further deterioration,” said SD5 officials.
The school has been closed since a fire in early July caused significant damage to the building.
The School Board is working toward a solution in the meantime.
“The Board of Education continues to be a strong advocate for the replacement of Amy Woodland Elementary School,” said SD5.
“We are currently waiting for a decision from the Ministry of Education and Child Care and the Schools Protection Program.”
