The annual Salvation Army kettle fundraiser kicked off on Nov. 26 at the Cranbrook Save-on-Foods, with a goal to raise $60,000.
Mayor Wayne Price says he’s always impressed by how much residents give year after year.
“It almost lets you know that it’s Christmas time when you see the kettle out,” he added.
“It gets people in the Christmas spirit for sure and people are still giving.”
Last year the fundraiser raised approximately $55,000 on a $50,000 goal with all of the funds to go to the local Salvation Army’s operations.
Price says more people need support and it’s not just people living on the street.
“It’s not just the people you see on the street who are disadvantaged it goes into the general population and the community,” he said.
“More and more children each year aren’t getting three meals a day.”
Major Rick Robbins who runs the Cranbrook and Fernie Salvation Army says they will be set up at a number of locations throughout the community and they can always use more volunteers.
“It’s a two-hour commitment. If you want to volunteer give us a call down at the Salvation Army,” he added.
“Our locations are here at Save-on-Food, Superstore, Walmart and the Tamarack Mall.”
Starting on Dec. 1 they will also be set up at the BC Liquor Store.
