Residents are asked to be mindful of thin ice on local lakes and streams as temperatures begin to dip below freezing.
The City of Cranbrook is asking residents to be vigilant about the dangers posed by thin ice, especially to children and pets.
“For your safety, please stay off any ice until it is at least six inches thick. This includes Joseph Creek, Idlewild, and Elizabeth Lakes, where conditions can vary, and ice thickness may be unpredictable.,” said city officials.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to talk to their children about the risks associated with thin ice.
“It’s essential that everyone, especially adults, lead by example and avoid stepping onto ice surfaces. Pets should also be kept away from open water and thin ice to prevent accidents,” said City staff.
“Stay safe and help protect your loved ones—whether human or furry—from the dangers that winter ice can bring.”
