The Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has supported the Sparwood Food Bank in finding a new home for its operations with a $180,000 grant to purchase a building.
In late 2023, the Sparwood Food Bank learned they had three months to vacate their rental property, but finding a suitable location was a challenge.
“We explored every option,” said Tracey Brook-Baker, Sparwood Food Bank Treasurer.
“Church basements, industrial spots—we were desperate for anything. We left no stone unturned.”
Brook-Baker says the food bank needed a stable, permanent location to effectively run their operation.
“One building had been in the back of my mind,” says Brook-Baker. “After a couple of emails with the owner, he agreed to sell.”
The Trust says the Sparwood Food Bank serves over 100 people per month alongside a food recovery program that has kept about 250,000 kilograms of food out of landfills since 2019.
“There’s a bright future ahead for the Sparwood Food Bank, and this new building reflects the dedication and resilience of its team and volunteers,” said Will Nixon, Delivery of Benefits and Special Initiatives Director.
“Their commitment to securing a permanent space means they can now serve Sparwood residents even better, with more room to grow and meet local needs. Congratulations to the Sparwood Food Bank team on this incredible achievement—together with the community’s support, we’re making a difference, one meal at a time.”
CBT Officials say the new building is almost three times the size of the Food Bank’s previous 600-square-foot location.
“It’s a relief to finally have space for everything—room for the food recovery program, an area to put hampers together. We even have an office and storage space,” said Brook-Baker.
