A controlled pile burn is underway in the Kimberley Nature Park this week.
The Kimberley Fire Department is leading this project as part of the city’s Wildfire Management Plan, with the goal of reducing the risks of large, uncontrolled wildfires.
Residents in the area may see smoke rising from the Nature Park area.
“We recognize that smoke can be disruptive, but weather conditions over the next few days are favourable for swift smoke dissipation, and the burn is being carefully managed to minimize impact,” said the City.
“This practice is also in line with traditional land management techniques used by Indigenous peoples, who have long recognized the benefits of controlled burns for maintaining healthy forests.”
The City opted to burn the piles over other options.
“While chipping may seem like an alternative, it is significantly more expensive and less effective in reducing wildfire risks,” said city officials.
