Overnight fire causes heavy damage at Brisco mill

An overnight fire has left the Brisco Wood Preservers sawmill severely damaged.

Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider says the fire will leave a lasting mark on the community.

“There are no words to adequately convey the impact of this fire,” said Schnider.

“The mill is a major employer, not just in Brisco, but surrounding communities and my heart is with everyone who has been impacted.”

The fire broke out late Thursday night in an area outside of a fire protection service area, so RCMP attended the scene.

RCMP alerted Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) emergency personnel of the fire and said the Office of the Fire Commissioner and Ministry of Environment were also notified.

“Officials on scene confirmed there was no risk to life safety and residents were safe to be in their homes or on their properties,” said RDEK officials.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will be led by the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

“I recognize there will be many questions as the full extent of the impact becomes clearer,” said Schnider.

“While we don’t know what is ahead, I do know the incredible heart and sense of community in Area G, and I have no doubt we will rise up in support of all those who’ve been impacted in whatever way we can in the days and weeks to come.”
