Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick says city staff were able to cross several large projects off of their to-do list through the last three months.
McCormick says a lot of this work is much-needed for the community.
“When we had our asset management plan put in place, it was a pretty big deal because we were very much behind the eight-ball,” said McCormick.
“Over the last few years, we’ve been making excellent progress and this year is a good example of that. Staff have followed the asset management plan and were just going about and executing on it.”
Some of the bigger projects included a new sanitary sewer lining, the Knighton Road realignment project and the Swan Avenue retaining wall and pathway repairs.
McCormick says investing in infrastructure work is vital to keep the city operating smoothly.
“The infrastructure in Kimberley is pretty old and whether it’s old or new, people expect the water to turn on when they use the tap,” said McCormick.
“We can’t take that for granted, so we need to be continually upgrading our infrastructure and we have a really good momentum going on right now.”
McCormick is pleased with the amount of construction happening in the community.
“It’s the mark of a growing community. We’ve had modest growth in our population for the last 15 years,” said McCormick.
“From an affordability point of view, it means we don’t have to keep going back to taxpayers for more money because we have more contributions coming in. Generally speaking, it all feels very positive.”
Work on several other projects have begun and they are expected to be wrapped up next year, such as the new Centre 64 stage and landscaping and the Cominco Gardens Rejuvenation Project.
