Air Quality Advisory in effect for Cranbrook

Update: The air quality advisory was lifted at 11am.

An Air Quality Advisory is in effect in the Cranbrook area, as heightened concentrations of fine particulate matter have been detected.

The alert has been issued by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Interior Health.

Officials say exposure can be a bigger risk for people with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes and respiratory infections such as COVID-19.

“Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions or acute infections should postpone or reduce strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted,” said health officials.

“Anyone experiencing symptoms such as continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheezing, should follow the advice of their health care provider.”

Infants, older adults and pregnant women are also at heightened health risk from air pollution.

Health officials note that staying indoors can help reduce exposure.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, air pollution is expected to linger until weather conditions change.
