Sparwood council gives three reading to street naming bylaw

Sparwood council has given three readings to a street name bylaw that will see a new naming convention in the community.

“The impetus is the development of Westwood Heights,” said planning director Patrick Sorfleet.

“New streets are being created and those streets need naming.”

The proposed names for the new streets are Elder Drive, Lilac Street, and Wild Rose Street.

Any new streets off of that development area will carry a plant theme.

Sorfleet says all street names are up to council, but they typically take recommendations from the developer.

“Streets are able to be named by council,” he said.

“It’s council’s prerogative to assign names and the practice is for the developer to pitch names and council will approve or refuse them or suggest different ones.”

Sparwood uses themes for all of its street names except for the industrial area.

All streets in the main part of Sparwood use trees and the Whisky Jack area uses bird names.
