As the provincial election grows near, get to know your local BC NDP candidate for the Kootenay-Rockies riding: Sam Atwal
Who is Sam Atwal?
Born and raised in mining towns, from Manitoba to Alberta, Atwal understands the challenges facing people and families in these communities. It’s why he’s running to be an MLA – to help strengthen his community and make life easier for people and families.
“I live in Cranbrook and was in Sparwood for six years prior. I worked on projects at EVR and was a plant operator before that.” said Atwal.
“I am on Sparwood city council, and outside of work I have my family- my wife works in education, and we have two daughters.”
“Working in coal and the oil sands has given me a strong understanding of sustainable mining and how our communities can thrive with industry respecting the land. My professional background includes being self-employed, as well as working in the automotive sector, industrial sales, mining, and project development.”
A District Municipal Councillor and mentor to youth, Atwal is actively involved in his community.
He’s worked with Strengthening Early Years helping kids and families transition to kindergarten, with Youth Action Sparwood, and many other organizations, boards and committees.
He works hard every day for his neighbours and constituents, so they can live good lives in the communities they love.
The Issues: Healthcare, housing and affordability
Atwal agrees there are many challenges facing the riding, but housing is a clear top priority.
“Housing is just too expensive, and regular homebuyers are up against high interest rates and real estate speculators who want to cash in,” said Atwal.
“We’re creating 300,000 new middle-class homes, taking on speculators, breaking down barriers to construction, and making it easier to build and rent secondary/basement suites. We want educators, healthcare and all people to stay in our communities.”
Healthcare and cost of living remains concerning for Atwal, and
Final Words
Atwal says he will be a strong voice for the people of the Kootenay-Rockies, if given the opportunity. With a focus on fostering relationships regardless of political affiliation.
“My experience as a municipal councillor has taught me that some issues need to be solved in Victoria.”
“I have a proven record of putting community needs first and advocating effectively to get things done. My approach is based on collaboration and gaining understanding, asking questions and being receptive to new information.”
“I believe we are stronger together and I will work with people to create solutions.”
“Nobody should be afraid of being who they are, and that’s a big push that we want to make sure that we’re hearing from everyone.”
