As the provincial election grows near, get to know your local BC NDP candidate for the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding: Andrea Dunlop.
Who is Andrea Dunlop?
Andrea Dunlop is a retired high school teacher from Windemere, who is continuously building deep roots in her community.
Growing up in a small town, Dunlop has helped successive generations of small-town British Columbians enter the world as active and engaged citizens.
“I actually grew up and sent my entire life in this riding and started off my schooling in Golden, went to Nicholson and spent the rest of my life in Windermere and became a high school teacher and just recently retired after 30 years.” said Dunlop.
A ten-year board member of the Windermere Community Association, she wants to tackle the big challenges we all face with rigorous and evidence-based action. Which is why she is running with the NDP, to build homes for people, to strengthen our healthcare system, and to grow a strong and clean economy.
“I believe the most important qualification for an MLA are the ability to learn, listen and communicate effectively. with those skills they can be a strong advocate for their riding and deliver real results for people.” Said Dunlop.
“As a teacher, my job was to be an advocate for students, so they had the opportunity to grow and thrive and give back to our community with their skills. There are a lot of similarities with the job of an MLA.”
The Issues: Housing, Forestry and Childcare
Dunlop says she has been listening to the people in the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding, and one key challenge facing communities is housing, and affordable housing, and the flow on effect.
“People with the skills that we need to expand and grow our economy, cannot find housing and are therefore forced to leave our area. This is having an impact on our families, businesses and our communities. The BC NDP have a plan to create 300,000 new homes over the next 10 years.”
Management of our forests remains topical across all riding, with Dunlop say her party will continue to take action.
“One of the reasons I want this job is because of the health and management of our local forests. Each summer we live in anxiety and with our bags packed and gas tanks full. For locals it seems like the solution is simple.”
“We need to thin the forest next to our communities and remove the fuel so the fires will not burn so intensely and in the process create healthier forests, wildlife habitat and wildlife quarters and ensure a more sustainable logging industry in the future.”
Dunlop says her and her party acknowledge the struggles people are having everyday, including the hit to the hip pocket with childcare fees.
“Childcare is one of the largest expensive young families have every month. The NDP have created a childcare plan that is growing across the province to ensure all families will have access to $10 a day childcare in the future.” said Dunlop.
Final words
“If Elected I will be a strong advocate for people and communities across our riding, to ensure they can take advantage of the resources and opportunities around us.” said Dunlop.
General voting day in the 2024 provincial election is October 19.
