City officials say the odour in Cranbrook’s water supply is normal for this time of year and is not a health concern.
According to Cranbrook staff, the city’s water supply is mostly served by surface water in the Phillips Reservoir and temperature changes can cause a shift in the reservoir.
“The cooler, denser water sinks and causes warmer water lower in the reservoir to turn over to the top often bringing organic material with it,” said the city.
Officials say the cooler temperatures with the changing season is behind the smelly water.
“We sample our water throughout the system on a weekly basis, and the water being delivered to your homes and businesses is safe to use,” said Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works.
“This is an annual occurrence for us, and really only lasts a few weeks.”
