Concerned Kimberley residents are coming together with hopes of forming a Block Watch to keep an eye out for crime and suspicious activity in the community.
The local RCMP detachment participated in a meeting set for Monday, Oct. 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial Centre.
“We’re going to be holding a Block Watch information session for the public,” said Staff Sgt. Steve Woodcox.
“Some members of the public contacted us about starting a block watch, so we’re going to give a presentation about it.”
A Block Watch is a group of citizens who look out for crime and suspicious activity in the community.
“It’s made up of citizens who are concerned about crime in the community. They work like the eyes and ears of the police because we can’t be in every place all the time,” said Woodcox.
“If they see anything suspicious, then they would call and report that to us.”
Woodcox says residents grew concerned due to a string of similar incidents.
“We (the RCMP) spoke a few times about the issues of lug nuts being loosened on people’s vehicles,” said Woodcox.
“Around that time, we were contacted by some people who were interested in starting a Block Watch.”
Woodcox says the public meeting will go over several topics.
“We’ll talk about things like vehicle security, home security, how to spot suspicious activity in the neighbourhood and what kind of information they should take down to tell police,” said Woodcox.
The meeting will be open to any Kimberley residents who want to learn more about the program.
“We’re more than happy to provide information to anyone who is interested in joining the Block Watch,” said Woodcox.
