A pair of wildlife collisions in the Elk Valley on Thursday has RCMP reminding people to be cautious of animals along the highway.
BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says drivers need to be especially cautious in autumn.
“Fall is a bit of a high-risk time for wildlife collision, especially with deer,” said McLaughlin.
“You’ll also see an increase in moose and bear activity. You really have to be careful with large animals because they can do a lot of damage and even cause fatalities.”
On Thursday, Oct. 3, Elk Valley RCMP responded to two separate wildlife collisions, one resulting in a black bear fatality and another ending in serious injuries to an elk.
McLaughlin says it is important to stay alert at all times and keep your lights on when you are driving at night.
“You need to be aware that animals can bolt suddenly or unpredictably. One of the best things you can do is slow down and be aware that animals are extra active at dawn and dusk,” said McLaughlin.
