Sparwood extends land use permit with trails alliance

Sparwood council has authorized a five-year recreation land use permit extension with the Sparwood Trails Alliance.

The agreement will allow the alliance to maintain the multi-use trail system in Sparwood and promote environmental education to trail users.

However, some changes have been made to the use permit.

A Westwood parcel has been removed as New Dawn Developments bought the land and the alliance won’t be required to remove noxious weeds.

Councillor Steve Kallies says it would be unfair to the alliance to put that onus on them.

“It’s a volunteer group that’s completely funded by grants, donations and membership fees,” he said.

“They do a really excellent job and the trails are fantastic. I don’t know if we want to add that burden, especially considering that you do need to hire someone qualified to treat them.”

The previous agreement was set to expire on Oct. 31.

The new agreement will start on Nov. 1 and run until Oct. 31, 2029.
