The Elk Valley Field House Society is asking the City of Fernie to commit to up to $500,000 for a replacement community centre.
Fernie’s community centre closed on June 12 after mold and other health concerns were found in the building.
The building is beyond repair and the city has been looking at options for a replacement facility.
The Field House Society has proposed a temporary fabric dome structure that could potentially be installed by late winter.
The society has had interest from organizations willing to provide grant funding but the financial commitment from the city is needed.
CAO Michael Boronowski says the city may have enough RMI funds for the project.
“If council is advancing the consideration, we are recommending that consultation be conducted to explore the use of RMI funds,” he said.
“These are municipal funds that are received to positively impact the visitor experience.”
If the city were to push some projects under the RMI fund there would be approximately $525,000 of available money.
City staff will conduct formal consultation with Tourism Fernie and RMI program stakeholders regarding the use of the funds and report back by the Oct. 8 council meeting.
