Cranbrook council approves remedial action order for former Knight’s Hall debris

Cranbrook city council has imposed a remedial action order to apply a dust sealant to the former Knight’s Hall debris at 22 Briar Avenue NW.

School District 5 has expressed concern over the large debris pile due to the proximity to Pinewood Elementary School.

City staff said testing was done and the pile does contain hazardous material including asbestos.

The sealant will be applied by a controlled stream via a hose, by a contracted technician.

The city had imposed a remedial action order to have the former Knight’s Hall building demolished after a fire destroyed it last year.

The city also approved a remedial action order back in June to have the debris piles removed.

The owner didn’t have them moved within 30 days so the city will hire a contractor to do the work and charge the owner through property taxes.
