Sparwood Mayor David Wilks has been elected as one of five UBCM directors at large.
“I put my name forward for director at large and was selected by my peers as one of five directors at large for the province,” he said.
“We’ll move forward over the next year and move our concerns to the province forward.”
Directors at large will serve on the UBCM board and help advocate needs to provincial officials.
Wilks is the only director at large east of Kelowna.
He says it’s important the Kootenays have a voice at the table to fight for rural British Columbia.
“It’s vitally important to have a rural perspective of what happens in other parts of the province,” he said.
“It’s a big area and different than other areas of the province. We have to make sure the province understands that one size does not fit all.”
He says they’ll have to wait until the provincial election is settled to really get to work but he’s just grateful to have been selected.
“Thanks to all of my peers across the province who selected me,” Wilks said.
“It’s a humbling experience and I look forward to serving them.”
