The BC Wildfire Service is working with the Rocky Mountain Resource District to conduct a prescribed burn in the Peavine area near Cranbrook.
BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) officials say the burn will cover up to 49 hectares as part of a fuel break meant to cut down on wildfire risks.
The exact timing of the burn will depend on weather conditions, but it is expected to begin as early as Friday, Sept. 20.
The BCWS say the burn is meant to contribute to a broader fuel break for Cranbrook, reduce the amount of accumulated woody debris and other fuels and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the area.
Smoke may impact nearby residents and will be visible from Cranbrook, surrounding communities and drivers along Highway 3, 93 and 95A.
“Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for smoke dispersal, though smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning after burn operations,” said the BCWS.
“Despite all precautions to manage it, unintended smoke impacts are possible after any burn.”
