First responders reminding residents of road rules for approaching emergency vehicles

The city of Cranbrook and local first responders are stressing the importance of knowing the rules around emergency vehicles’ right-of-way.

The Cranbrook Fire Department has been seeing increased challenges with drivers not knowing what to do when an emergency vehicle is trying to pass them.

“Drivers often do not notice the approaching emergency vehicles, or do not know what to do when they do see them,” said Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services director Scott Driver.

“Usually, the best thing is to pull over to the right using your turn signal and stop, remembering not to block intersections. All vehicles on both sides of the road must pull over to leave a clear path whenever an emergency vehicle uses its siren and flashing lights.”

Emergency vehicles with sirens and flashing lights always have the right-of-way and all drivers are required to stop.
