The East Kootenay Emergency Management Team is applying for Disaster Financial Assistance from the province due to the weekend storm that struck the Columbia Valley.
RDEK officials said the first step is to get the province to declare it an eligible event.
Residents impacted by the storm are asked to fill out damage reports.
“In order to present our request to the Province, we need to be able to clearly articulate the magnitude of the storm’s impacts,” said Regional Information Officer Loree Duczek.
“We have set up a Damage Report Form that can be filled out and includes an area for images to be uploaded.”
The form can be used for damages starting on Aug. 23 through to Sept. 3 if more damage occurs during the week.
“This is for everyone in the Columbia Valley who has been impacted, including all rural areas, municipalities and First Nations, as we are all working together and submitting the request collectively,” added Duczek.
“Residents are being encouraged to keep a detailed record of damages, including receipts and costs for clean-up and to contact their insurance companies to see if they are covered.”
Forms are available here and must be submitted by 8 a.m. on Sept. 3.
Clean-up is still going on and the RDEK said rural transfer station bins are being serviced more often to help deal with the additional volume, but the best option is to bring debris directly to the Columbia Valley landfill.
