Sparwood council to consider AI fire detecting software

The District of Sparwood is looking at possibly implementing AI technology around the community to help detect fires earlier.

Firemark AI Inc. is offering a pilot proposal to the district that would cost approximately $62,000 for a one-year term.

The technology uses infrared sensors, cameras and predictive programming to find wildfires as early as possible.

It also uses autonomous drones to scout the area when a new start is detected.

Even with autonomous flights a drone pilot would need to be trained.

“You need a pilot on-site whether it’s an autonomous flight or not,” said Zubin Kothawala with Firemark AI.

“You need someone who can take over control in an emergency. We like to train local first responders.”

The same company is currently in talks with the Regional District of East Kootenay.

No decision has been made by either Sparwood or the RDEK.

Mayor David Wilks said they will be talking with the fire chief and getting a staff report before they make up their mind.
