The District of Sparwood is applying to the provincial disaster resilience and innovation funding program to secure money for a flood mitigation project.
The proposed project is along the southern access road to get to the bridge abutment, where the river has been slowly eroding the road.
The estimated cost of the project is $2,350,000.
Engineering project manager André LeBlanc said it’s a much-needed fix.
“This bridge hosts critical infrastructure, such as our sanitary line and waterline. The location we would like to apply this grant to would further protect our critical infrastructure.”
If approved, the grant will pay 100 per cent of the cost up to $5 million.
If the district decided to fund the project without the grant it would result in a nearly 51 per cent tax increase, which they are not prepared to do.
