Fernie adopts George S. Majic Spiritus Award policy

The City of Fernie has passed a policy on how the annual George S. Majic Award will be presented.

The award was first presented in 2006 and is given to someone who demonstrated a constant commitment to the community, but there was no official policy for the city.

Under the adopted policy, the nomination period will open in October and nominators will be limited to submitting two candidates each year.

Council will consider the nominees and select a winner in November and an award ceremony will take place during a December council meeting.

Recipients are given a take-home rock award.

The city will also be looking to eventually change the name of the award.

“The Majic family will graciously be providing the take-home award rock for the next three years,” said deputy clerk Meredith Daniel.

“After 2026, which will be the 20th anniversary, the Majic family has agreed that it would be an excellent opportunity to transition the award to say a Spiritus Award versus having George Majic’s name in there.  That being said, his legacy would be kept in the description of the award.”

The policy will be reviewed every year when considering the award nominee each November.
