Wasa development proposal moves past third reading

An official community plan and zoning amendment to allow a 16-lot residential subdivision in Wasa has been given third reading by the Regional District of East Kootenay.

The developer was originally looking to subdivide the land on Lazy Lake Road into 24 lots, but the RDEK board deferred it in April due to water concerns.

Interior Health believed the drinking water and wastewater disposal wouldn’t have been suitable for 24 lots.

However, the new proposal of 16 lots with a minimum parcel size of one hectare would be consistent with the RDEK’s general policy as well as the provincial standard.

Director Ron Popoff said he was fine with the proposal if Interior Health was.

“This is the standard practice and the assessments that go on today have far improved compared to the lack of assessments decades ago,” he said.

“If Interior Health is okay with this proposal as amended, then I have complete confidence that the quality and protection of the groundwater is going to be fine.”

Wayne Price was the only director to vote against giving the proposal third reading.
