Cranbrook council approves funds for fire mitigation work

The City of Cranbrook has moved $40,000 from the wildfire mitigation reserve to allow Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services to conduct fire mitigation work in the Phillips Reservoir area.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services director Scott Driver said it’s building off work they’ve done in the past.

“It connects a lot of the treated lands up in the area and connects to a lot of the work that the province is doing as well,” he said.

The city will be recouping the cost of the mitigation by selling the timber.

Driver said some planned burns will also be done this fall.
“There’s some fuel mitigation work that’s coming to the Moir Park area due to the increased hazard of wildfires,” he said.
“We’re looking at doing some prescribed burning there for a second time.”
A fire guard is being installed in the area this week to prep for that burn.
