The City of Kimberley is looking to fill a seat in council chambers through a by-election.
The seat was left vacant after Steven Royer stepped down for personal reasons in April.
Kimberley’s council has been operating with six members.
“City councils have an odd number of members for a good reason: to make sure you don’t end up with a tie vote,” said Mayor Don McCormick.
“If it ends up in a tie, the motion is defeated, so it had the potential to really cause things to get dragged out longer than what would normally be the case.”
Despite the potential issues that could cause, McCormick said city council has operated fairly smoothly.
Nominations for the upcoming by-election will be open from August 6 to 16, and packages can be picked up at city hall.
“We’re mid-term, so this a really good opportunity for people who might want to dip their toe into what it’s like to be on council without the four-year commitment,” said McCormick.
“This will be a two-year term that will take us to the next local election.”
Advance polling will be open on September 11 and 18, ahead of general voting day on September 21.
Voters can cast their ballots at Centennial Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all voting days.
