Construction resumes on Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project

Construction on the Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project has resumed after crews faced some challenges with the weather.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) said the third concrete pour was delayed for a few days because of extreme temperatures.

Work started at 3 a.m. on Monday as crews poured 145 cubic meters of concrete into the 500 cubic meter outlet structure.

RDEK officials said Fairmont Resort Road saw an increase in traffic on Monday morning as a result of this work, but there were no interruptions to vehicle flow through the area.

RDEK Manager of Engineering Brian Funke said the project will include a barrier and outlet structure, creek diversion and basin, reinforcement and relocation of some water lines and an access road.

“We’ve seen large debris flows coming down into the community, which is a threat to homes, properties and people,” said Funke.

“The finished barrier will be able to collect about 90,000 cubic metres of debris and stop it before it comes into the community.”

The $13.5 million project started in September 2023, and is expected to be wrapped up by the end of this year.
