Sparwood council member to run in provincial politics

Sparwood Council Member Sam Atwal hopes to take the Kootenay-Rockies MLA seat for the BC NDP in the 2024 provincial election.

Atwal has a history of working with Strengthening Early Years transitions to Kindergarten and Youth Action Sparwood and hopes to back the creation of a sustainable future for the province’s children.

“I’m running to make sure we have a solid future for our kids to be able to come home and hoping they are able to leave to go to school when they get older and come back after,” said Atwal.

“It’s really focusing on those pieces behind that.”

Atwal was raised in mining towns in Manitoba and Alberta before arriving in Sparwood.

He said he is familiar with the struggles faced by resource-dependent communities and wants to prioritize those issues in the election.

“Housing, health care and affordability are some of those things where we can really see that things are tough and everybody is feeling it,” said Atwal.

“It’s not just about providing solutions, it’s about understanding what the problem is and tackling that directly. With the David Eby NDP, we’ve seen a lot of that with putting in 3,000 new homes across the province and putting people ahead of speculators.”

Premier David Eby said Atwal has a strong history of working with the community.

“As an elected official in Sparwood, and as a volunteer with kids and young adults, Sam works every day to make his community stronger,” said Premier David Eby.

“The people of Kootenay-Rockies need homes they can afford, a stronger public healthcare system, and money back in their pocket. Sam will deliver.”

“I’m big on having communication and conversations with as many people as possible. I think my track record in municipal politics speaks for how much I’m going to advocate for people on a provincial level,” said Atwal.

“I want to help create stronger communities for our kids to come home to.”

The 2024 Provincial Election trail kicks off in September, with voting day set for October 19.
