Fernie city council has voted in favour of a zoning change to convert the former fire hall into a mix of retail and housing.
The proposal was brought forward as a collaboration between the city and the Elk Valley Family Society.
“The city is very pleased to support the Elk Valley Family Society with advancing this much-needed redevelopment of a key and underutilized corner of downtown,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.
“Leveraging City-owned property to improve affordable housing availability and the diversity of housing types is a key facet of council’s strategic plan.”
The idea is to have commercial space on the ground floor and long-term rentals above.
Rentals would be a mix of studio, one, and two-bedroom units.
The development is dependent on the Elk Valley Family Society receiving grant funding.
