The City of Fernie has adopted its new water regulation bylaw and has quickly entered into Stage 2 restrictions.
Under this stage, you can only water your trees, shrubs, flowers and lawn from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for two hours.
Even-numbered properties can use their sprinklers on Mondays and Thursdays, while even-numbered properties can water on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Vegetable gardens are exempt from Stage 2 restrictions.
City officials said you can wash your car during your allowed time as long as you are using an automatic shut-off device.
You cannot wash sidewalks or driveways unless it is for health and safety reasons or to prep for surface painting.
Permits from City Hall are required for daily watering of new trees or grass seeds.
“Water being a key issue, especially in this heat wave, it is important that we all behave responsibly and ensure we minimize our water usage,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.
These water restrictions are new to the community, as they were just adopted by city council on Tuesday.
“Most citizens understand the importance of water conservation in hot temperatures. This just ensures we have a consistent set a rules that will apply to everyone,” said Milligan.
Due to the hot dry weather and increased demand on the city’s water supply, officials were quick to use the new regulations.
