The Cranbrook RCMP received 2,075 reports between April and June, a slight decrease from 2,099 the previous quarter.
Commercial break-and-enters were down with 18 compared to 25 and residential break-and-enters dropped 50 per cent from 12 to six.
Staff Sergeant Barry Graham said staffing has been a challenge recently
“Cranbrook RCMP staffing resources are at a critically low level. We are struggling to maintain minimum resource levels on a daily basis,” he added.
“It’s due to several medical absences and members retiring as well as transfers and other leave. It’s extremely challenging. We risk getting down to one or two members on a shift.”
He said they have been able to get support from other local RCMP detachments while they try to fix their staffing shortage.
“We have to kind of look after each other,” Graham said.
“It’s great to have that support but if we can somehow get to the level where we can control it, we can do our vacancy management patterns and we can lend people out.”
